JSON to YAML

Convert JSON into readable YAML.

Processed locally in your browser. Nothing you type here is sent to our servers.

What does this tool do?

YAML is a superset of JSON, so every JSON document has a valid YAML equivalent. This tool produces the idiomatic block-style version — nested maps as indented blocks, arrays as dashed lists — which is what Kubernetes manifests, GitHub Actions workflows, Docker Compose files and most configuration formats expect.

Conversion is done by js-yaml, the reference JavaScript YAML implementation, running in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Paste your JSON into the input panel.
  2. Press Convert to YAML, or ⌘/Ctrl + Enter.
  3. Adjust indentation, key sorting or line wrapping — the output updates immediately.
  4. Copy the YAML or download it as a .yaml file.

Common use cases

  • Turning a JSON API response into a Kubernetes manifest you can commit.
  • Migrating a .json config file to the YAML format a tool expects.
  • Making a deeply nested payload readable — YAML's indentation is usually easier to scan than braces.
  • Producing a Docker Compose or CI workflow file from generated JSON.

Limitations

  • Strings that YAML would otherwise read as another type get quoted automatically. "yes", "no", "on", "off" and "1.0" all appear in quotes, because unquoted they would parse back as booleans or numbers.
  • JSON comments do not exist, so none can be carried into the YAML. Any comments you want must be added afterwards.
  • Anchors and aliases are not generated; repeated structures are written out in full.
  • Very large integers are subject to the same IEEE 754 limits as any JSON parsing — beyond 253, precision is lost.
